South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority
The Year of Active Travel
Background
The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) is a formal partnership of four councils across South Yorkshire, dedicated to regional policy shaping and decision-making.
Brief
Active Travel is a key element of the Mayor’s vision, aiming to establish South Yorkshire as the UK's healthiest place to live. This initiative also contributes to the Better Places and Fairer Places programmes, and is integral to the region’s Net Zero and sustainability goals.
We partnered with SYMCA to create a dynamic brand for the Year of Active Travel campaign. Our work included designing various assets, applications, and templates, alongside developing a comprehensive web presence to support the campaign. SYMCA has utilised this brand across numerous programmes and events, collaborating with groups like Living Streets, Bikeability, and Modeshift. Building on this, we launched the Mayor’s Walk and Wheel Challenge, engaging every primary school in the region through activity packs, communication strategies, and educational materials.
We introduced a cross-regional bike trail, featuring a four-day tour with Active Travel Commissioner and Olympian Ed Clancy, and cycling influencer Emily Chappell where our team developed all associated assets, communication programmes, and an accompanying web platform.

Testimonial
‘It’s been a pleasure to work with Whistlejacket on branding and materials for the South Yorkshire Mayor’s Year of Active Travel, and for our ongoing Tree for Everyone campaign. The team was really responsive and produced some excellent and creative branding and assets. A particular highlight were the resources for the Walk and Wheels Challenge for primary schools across the region’.
